‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s journey from injury table to scoring with the Basque club
Whenhe first time Gorka Guruzeta featured in English soil, an teenage representing the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Wycombe’s stadium in September 2015, he scored. The second time he played in England, against Sunderland following that, he converted. His third outing, against the Citizens soon after, well, he repeated the feat. As he revisited to Manchester to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in that year, he found the back of the net. It was a superb volley, as well. “In fact,” he says, “it’s a top-class goal in my career.” Therefore the team did what they had to do: they took him off.
“I became very upset,” the forward reveals, before breaking into laughter. “Probably there’s a recording. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the second half: my contract wasn’t finalized deal, I kept finding the net, many stories circulated, you know how it is. No confirmation on interest from Newcastle, but I remember reading about the Red Devils, standard transfer gossip. I have no idea if it was accurate, but supposing an offer came, my desire was to remain at Athletic. I’m fortunate to be here.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At the training ground, the city, the early training is set to begin; following that, the short journey to Loiu and another flight to England, on this occasion to take on the Magpies in the UCL on midweek. Mentioning that phrase makes Guruzeta smile. It has become a tough year for Athletic, partly because of the pressures of their participation. Beaten in added time in the weekend clash, they have secured just a single victory of their past eight league games and been defeated by Arsenal and Dortmund in European competition. Yet, look at the overall situation, the memorable evenings and upcoming events, and he feels a calm gratitude within him.
In the 36 months since he had rejoined the team, Gorka has been a semi-final participant, stopped at the gates the showpiece event by United, and has ridden an historic vessel through the waterway surrounded by a million fans after lifting the trophy, the first title in 40 years. He’s now the top goal-getter in the Champions League, where they are countercultural and debuting in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he states.
Guruzeta thought it challenging enough just to make the first team and his assessment was correct. The son of the ex-La Real star the former professional and a regular attendee at the team he now opposes, Guruzeta is a graduate of Antiguoko, the local academy that developed the Arsenal manager, the former star and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at his teens but after making his senior debut in that summer, he went through a torn cruciate, being released, a drop in category and a recall before he could truly get a chance, coming back aged 26 to enjoy the highlights of the club’s history.
“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the top level but with every stage you progress through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You arrive and then … you’re sent away.” He had limited game time in six games between his bow and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches there and my knee gave way.
“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it forced me to alter the perspective. Healing from a serious ailment is hard, but it’s beneficial. You adopt practices you didn’t have. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I did the sessions and then head home, as a youngster does. At the complex, you have everything, so take full advantage. Training, prehab. Strength training. With hip imbalance, address that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, enhance it further. Every small aspect: perform them.
“Among professionals you’re going to collide with opponents who have experienced contact 200,000 times. Highly robust. Reviewing old images: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Sessions end, but additional work remains. Everyone else is ready, really ready; you have to be too.”
You also have to play. The striker moved in tears in 2020, aged 23, joining the second tier. At Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he netted three goals in numerous matches. During his Amorebieta stint in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and if one day the requirement appears where you play, a return could happen. You have to be ready. When the opportunity came, it was a dream come true. Lifting the cup, European football, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
No wonder he says this is to be enjoyed. All the more so after the previous season which, at times, was focused on persistence. After being leading scorer with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
