Edwards and O'Neil represent the early names in the frame to succeed Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolves.
Pereira was sacked on Sunday after the squad's 10-match winless start to the Premier League season.
And Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have historic associations to the team - are part of the names to be evaluated by the club leadership.
Edwards is presently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a potential obstacle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the former Luton manager - who made more than 100 of games for the club during his playing career - is said to be a strong candidate for the position.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys backing from the Wolves directors as they begin the process of hiring a fresh manager.
O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected contender, although he would be a surprising choice given he was sacked by the club in December last year.
The ex- West Ham player is currently unemployed which means the club would not need to provide any buyout fee.
